Mandarin Lessons
Course Goals and Objectives: To develop oral, listening, reading and writing skills. To establish and maintain relationships through exchanging information and plans, and sharing ideas and opinions.

- Supplementary Audios, Media, Apps, etc.
Mandarin 1A (Beginner):
Class Focus: Pronunciation, tones, understanding characters (radicals, strokes). Understanding Chinese culture and history through language.
Learning Objectives: This course offers an introduction to speaking, reading, and writing Chinese, as well as mastery of basic grammar. Students will have a strong command of 450characters.
Major Topics:Greetings, introductions, asking questions, talking about yourself, asking for directions, counting and telling time.
Mandarin 1B (Beginner Intermediate):
Class Focus: Pronunciation and conversational emphasis, establish confidence with the language.
Learning Objectives: Students continue to develop language skills and further their comprehension and use of basic structures through speaking, and writing. Vocabulary increases to 1000characters.
Major Topics: Talking about family, counting and age, cultural expressions/idioms, shopping, discussing your abilities, giving advice, health and holidays.
Mandarin 2A (Intermediate):
Class Focus: Taught mostly in Chinese. Complex level of reading and writing, gaining fluency in speaking.
Learning Objectives: This course provides continued practice in speaking, reading and writing at a more high-intermediate level. Students will be able to describeactions,give commands and usefuture tense. Vocabulary increases to 1,500 characters.
Major Topics: Travel, clothing, arts, Chinese New Year, Opera and music, Chinese cultural concepts and technology.
Mandarin 2B (High Intermediate):
Class Focus: Taught mostly in Chinese. Students begin writing essays and reading Chinese newspaper articles. Students will be able to discuss complex ideas and opinions.
Learning Objectives: Students continue to develop all areas of the language, with more complex languagestructures and functions. Chinese cultural knowledge is integrated into learning the language. Vocabulary expands to 2,000 characters.
Major Topics: Chinese history, culture and geography.
Mandarin 3A (Advanced):
Class Focus: Taught entirely in Chinese. Incorporate media focus.
Learning Objectives: Students advance their language abilities in all areas and will be able to write essays, read Chinese newspaper articles, watch and explain film scenes. Vocabulary expands to 2,500.
Major Topics: Use various media including literature, newspaper, television and film.
Mandarin 3B (Proficient):
Class Focus: Taught entirely in Chinese. Gain a fluent level in Mandarin Chinese.
Learning Objectives: Students attain absolute fluency in Mandarin Chinese. Vocabulary increases to 3,000 - 4,000 words (There are 20,000 Chinese characters and to know 4,000 characters is considered fluent)
Major Topics: Lectures,complex discussions, debates andpresentations.
